One of the W’s most recognizable and trailblazing figures on and off the court – and a Chicago basketball icon – is hanging up her jersey for good.

Cappie Pondexter, a two-time WNBA champion, announced in an Instagram post that she would, indeed, retire from basketball.

I didn’t expect to go out this way but I know God has something bigger in store.

A very sad day for me but I’m okay with the words retired.

In addition to her two rings, she also made the All-Star Game on seven occasions and was named one of the 20 greatest players in WNBA history. Her two championships came with the Phoenix Mercury.

For her career, she averaged over 16 points and is fourth all-time in points and sixth all-time in assists.

Her number was already retired at Rutgers.
