WNBA fans, women’s basketball fans, sports fans, just people in general will be happy to see a familiar face on the Seattle Storm’s bench.

Dan Hughes had surgery last month to remove a cancerous tumor. The Storm announced that Hughes has resumed full head coaching duties and will return to Seattle’s bench on Friday when his team takes on the Los Angeles Sparks at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett.

According to a team press release, Dr. Amir Bastawrous performed Hughes’ procedure at the Swedish First Hill campus in Seattle.

I am thankful for the entire Swedish medical team’s exceptional care throughout this process.

I am also thankful to Gary Kloppenburg and the Storm coaching staff who guided our team through a grueling stretch of the schedule with finesse. Our team has demonstrated incredible resilience and we will continue to fight each and every game.

The defending champion Storm were expected to encounter a trying 2019 given that they would be playing the season without reigning league and Finals MVP Breanna Stewart as well as Sue Bird. Currently, the Storm are 5-4 on the young season and would be the fifth seed in the postseason behind the Connecticut Sun (8-1), Chicago Sky (5-2), Washington Mystics (5-3), and Las Vegas Aces (4-3).
