Winning a championship in pro sports earns your team a trip to the White House to meet the President of the United States. The Minnesota Lynx have won three in the last five years, so visits to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue have become almost commonplace for the team from the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

This past Monday, the Lynx were again honored by President Barack Obama for their WNBA championship from the previous season. Among those that were also in attendance for the occasion were WNBA President Lisa Borders and Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.

So, this is the team’s third visit to the White House in the past five years. So, I guess I should ask—whose house?

–President Obama

Obama did take a moment to remember the late Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders who passed away last year from cancer. He also referenced the private concert the team received from Prince at Paisley Park after the Lynx won the championship last year. Prince also passed away earlier this year.

The President also took some time to reference the team and league’s charity court as well as congratulating the WNBA for its 20th anniversary.

Overall, the occasion was upbeat and festive as is any occasion when a team is celebrating a championship. Obama joked that Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was getting a bit “greedy” with winning so many championships.

After the President’s remarks, Lindsay Whalen took to the podium and also offered an interesting suggestion given that the POTUS is at the end of his second and final term at 1600.

Maybe if there’s a chance, we can get some legislation passed—you know—for you, four more years, and us, a couple more times here…[chuckles] [applause].

Obama quipped he would have to negotiate it with his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama.

What say you, FLOTUS?

Now that’s what we call…an endorsement!
