NY politician: MSG could lose tax break over Liberty move to Westchester

As most people know by now, Madison Square Garden has moved the New York Liberty out of its incumbent home arena in midtown Manhattan and to the suburbs of the city. They will be playing their future basketball – for the time being – at the Westchester County Center in White Plains as a caveat of a potential future sale of the franchise.

This development drew the notable ire of at least one Gotham politician.

The New York politico in question is Manhattan Borough president Gale Brewer, who warned MSG and James Dolan that the Liberty move could cost it dearly in the wallet.

A tax “abatement” which saves MSG approximately $50 million annually is up for renewal in a few years, and that could be ejected from Dolan’s books, Brewer warns.

In doing so, you have turned the ‘World’s Most Famous Arena’ into the world’s most famous stage for benching women athletes.

Shameful actions like this one, banishing a popular women’s professional sports team where fans cannot reach it, do not help your case.

Brewer also contended that the move to White Plains will make MSG’s planned sale of the team more difficult instead of easier.

The above tweet courtesy of Cheryl Reeve indicates she as well sides with Brewer in believing Dolan should not simply get away scott free with moving the Liberty out of New York City.
