It is only fitting that as the country’s highest profile basketball fan that one of the final things that President Barack Obama did while in office was congratulate last year’s WNBA champion Los Angeles Sparks.

Here is a copy of the letter sent to the Sparks from the outgoing president.

Nneka Ogwumike was overseas in Russia at the time she received the letter.

I got goose bumps when I saw President Obama’s signature on the letter.

Ogwumike mentioned how she and the Sparks players had hoped to pay a visit to the White House prior to Obama departing from office, but the task was more daunting than usual given how many Sparks players had commitments overseas.

There was a concerted effort on the part of the WNBAPA to get something done as well, but at the time, there was little response from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

That was until the letter arrived earlier this week.

We are all just so pleased that he made the space and time to do it, considering all the other things he had on his plate.

–Terri Jackson, WNBAPA Director of Operations

Sparks head coach Brian Agler was also pleased Obama acknowledged the 2016 WNBA champions.

His respect was genuine and we appreciate that he took the time.
