If it were not for coronavirus, the Phoenix Mercury would have played this past season’s home games at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum as its primary home court, Talking Stick Resort Arena is undergoing renovations.

When those renovations are complete, the Mercury will return to the venue that serves as the home court for its team as well as the Phoenix Suns – but will it still have its name?

It appears not as the arena’s namesake – the Talking Stick Resort (based in Scottsdale) has declined to extend its naming rights agreement for the venue past the 2020-21 NBA season.

It was previous known as US Airways Arena until 2014. Around that time, Tempe-based US Airways (which had one of its hubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport) was in the process of merging with American Airlines – based in another WNBA city in Dallas.

For now, the venue will be simply known as PHX Arena until a new naming rights agreement is announced.
