If the WNBA gets its wish, the Stars will have moved to Las Vegas, but will maintain its incumbent team name.

A report out of the Las Vegas Review-Journal indicates the WNBA plans to keep the Stars name for the former San Antonio-based franchise. An application was filed for “Las Vegas Stars” on Oct. 14 in Class 41 which sports and entertainment is included in, per a records request by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The report mentioned that there was once a Minor League Baseball team called the Las Vegas Stars that were in existence for most of the 1980s and 1990s. It also stated that a filing for “Las Vegas Stars Baseball Team” remains active and the trademark is still owned by Minor League Baseball.

Last month, it was announced that the Stars would be moving from San Antonio to Las Vegas after the franchise was sold from Spurs Sports & Entertainment to MGM Resorts. The team will play its home games at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
