Seattle Storm rallies for Planned Parenthood

Seattle—host of the 2017 All-Star Game and undoubtedly one of the most progressive cities in the country. Forward-thinking politics and Seattle seem to go together like…coffee and Seattle.

The Seattle Storm’s recent home game vs. the Chicago Sky had added meaning—because it was an opportunity for backers of Planned Parenthood to show their support for the organization.

A rally was held outside Key Arena with many supporters that backed the team’s newfound partnership with Planned Parenthood. There were a few in opposition as well, but in a dark “blue” city like Seattle, one can only be sure the backers outnumbered those in opposition.

It is the first time that a sports organization has come out publicly in support of the nonprofit that provides reproductive services to women. There was an online auction and the Storm pledged to give $5 from each sold ticket to Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest and the Hawaiian Islands, per the Seattle Times.

Breanna Stewart, in particular, has established herself lately as outspoken on social and equality issues. She spoke at last year’s ESPYs about why the WNBA is not given the media coverage that other leagues get.

We’re doing this because it’s something that we could do.
