Sue Bird: Storm would decline White House invite even if offered

The Seattle Storm in 2018 were one step ahead of everyone else in the WNBA. They are also one step ahead of everyone else when it comes to celebrating their accomplishments.

Prior to January 20, 2017, sports teams – regardless of who the president was – used to savor the opportunity to be honored by the Commander-In-Chief for their championship seasons. That all changed that day, and many teams – particularly in the WNBA and NBA are acting accordingly.

Sue Bird, now a three-time W champion told the Seattle Times the Storm do not expect to be recognized for winning the 2018 title at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue – and that they would decline an invitation even if it came.

At this point does it even need to be discussed?

It’s come up. We pay attention to what happened with Minnesota and not getting invited…We all pay attention to what’s going on.

The Lynx did not receive a White House invite last season after winning last year’s WNBA championship in five games over the Los Angeles Sparks. The Minnesota organization instead had a day of service in Washington, DC prior to a game against the Mystics.

A trip to 1600 was in order when the Storm last won in 2010.
