Tamara James used to play basketball for the Mystics—Washington, D.C.’s WNBA team, and a city that knows a bit about…well…politics.

She may not be bringing her talents to Capitol Hill (yet) but James was recently elected mayor of her hometown in Florida.

Dania Beach, Fla. (part of Broward County in South Florida) recently elected the 32-year old James as its next mayor. She had been involved in activism prior to assuming her new post.

“I am honored the residents chose me to represent the beautiful city of Dania Beach. I plan on being a voice for our residents, promoting smart economic growth and unifying us as a city. Although I am excited to begin this new journey, I know there is so much to be done. I am looking forward to winning championships for the oldest city in Broward County.”

Prior to entering the political arena, she was lighting up sports arenas as she became the all-time leading scorer with the Miami Hurricanes before being drafted by the Mystics in the 2006 WNBA Draft.

Among her campaign platforms listed on her website include the creation of a Youth Advisory Council, and the continued beautification of Dania Beach to stay competitive with other South Florida cities.

We approve this message! Congratulations!
