The WNBA and sneakers – two of our favorite things here at Beyond The W.

The W, as we know, is full of sneakerheads and those fully immersed in the kicks game – including Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Elena Delle Donne, Skylar Diggins-Smith, and Epiphanny Prince.

Another of the many players with an interest in sneakers is the Las Vegas Aces’ Tamera Young, who recently announced she debuted the ‘Army Youngie’ signature lifestyle sneaker through TY1 Gear, her clothing brand.

It includes camo hair, a calfskin tongue, a suede toe cap and lace panel along with a leather interior.

She spoke with The Undefeated prior to the big release and said that this was something she was working on since the summer.

It was brought to my attention that I should create my own because of my style and the influence I have. I was hesitant at first because I was unsure of the process of creating and selling a shoe.

I’ve worked hard to build my own brand, and to see the hard work paying off is an incredible feeling. I never imagined having my own sneaker, especially one that isn’t a basketball sneaker.

She also said that the material used to design the shoe was what impressed her the most about it as its design allows for either business or casual dress. The new kicks also raised the question on if she intends on releasing an athletics sneaker in the future.

I’ve thought about doing a basketball shoe, but I like this casual sneaker process better right now, stepping outside of the box as an athlete and creating a shoe that has nothing to do with playing basketball. If I ever got a shoe deal, I think it would be dope to have a TY1 sneaker. But until then, I like being in my own lane.
