Hitting shots from downtown and Diana Taurasi have gone together like 100-plus degree temperatures in Arizona during the summer months.

She reached another milestone in her career as the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer joined the 1,000 three-point club in the Phoenix Mercury’s 86-78 victory over the Dallas Wings.

Taurasi (26 points) reached the milestone before a packed house at Talking Stick Resort Arena, that was treated to an opening-weekend contest that featured several of the W’s premier players.

It was also a contest billed around two of women’s basketball’s premier bigs in the Wings’ Liz Cambage and the Mercury’s Brittney Griner. Cambage, in her WNBA return, finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while Griner completed her evening with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Skylar Diggins-Smith also contributed 18 points alongside Cambage’s 18.

Certainly not to be overlooked was the return of DeWanna Bonner to Phoenix. Her first regular season game back for the Mercury was highly successful notching a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams will travel to their next destinations as the season commences. As part of #WNBAAllDay, the Wings travel back home to await the Atlanta Dream while Phoenix will take on the Seattle Storm at KeyArena.
