It was a strong likelihood that Stanford women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer would finally reach win No. 1,099 to surpass the late, great Pat Summitt for first all-time on the Division I women’s basketball coaching wins list.
It had to be a purely euphoric feeling when it happened for real.

By virtue of the Cardinal’s 104-61 victory over Pacific, VanDerveer has leapfrogged Summitt for first-all time on the Division I list for women’s basketball.

The Pacific Tigers did close the gap after the second quarter to 43-32, a respectable outing against the No. 1-ranked team in the country. But the Cardinal proved exactly why they are the team to beat right now by outscoring Pacific 61-29 in the second half.
Kiana Williams scored 16 points. Lexie Hull and Fran Belibi each chimed in with 15 and Haley Jones and Anna Wilson finished with 14 apiece. Lacie Hull tallied 10 off the bench for the Cardinal.
Liana Tillman scored 15 to lead the Tigers. Anaya Brooklyn McDavid added 14 and Valerie Higgins scored 10.
History made 🙌🏀 Congrats, Coach! #alltimetara

I’m just going to get this out of the way. This night deserves a sold-out crowd at Maples Pavilion. It deserves Betty Ann at the mic, longtime season ticket holders in their seats and Rita in the stands and damn COVID. #alltimetara
