She faces stiff competition for the honors as another of the nominees is Naomi Osaka, who defeated Serena Williams in the semifinals of the Australian Open, then went on to win the Open itself.
Other nominees from other categories include LeBron James (Sportsman of the Year), the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Lakers (Sports Team of the Year), Patrick Mahomes (Breakthrough of the Year) and Alex Morgan, Alex Smith, Daniel Bard and Mikaela Shiffrin (Comeback of the Year).
