While this WNBA season will be unusual for obvious reasons, it will still be one where attention to social justice will be at the forefront.
In addition to featuring the message of Black Lives Matter on jerseys, the WNBA and its union will put particular focus on women killed at the hands of police or via racial violence – such as Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor and Vanessa Guillen.
Players will also wear warm-ups with Black Lives Matter on the front with Say Her Name on the back.
In addition, the WNBA announced a Social Justice Council that will include Layshia Clarendon (New York Liberty), A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces), Satou Sabally (Dallas Wings), Breanna Stewart (Seattle Storm), Tierra Ruffin-Pratt (Los Angeles Sparks) and Sydney Colson (Chicago Sky) among others.
One of the council’s advisors will be Alicia Garza, co-founder of Black Lives Matter.
