More and more, we are giving greater legitimacy to the contributions made to not only the sporting landscape but to society in general by the LGBTQ community. And we are better as a people for it.
Out Magazine released its “Out100” list for 2019. Among those that made said list was the Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner, who was also on Out’s 2013 list.
Visibility is power. Thank you to Athlete Ally Ambassador @mPinoe, @PeanutManuel, Kerron Clement, Britney Griner, and @RKRelentless for standing out and proud. #Out100 https://t.co/MvLdvDo7Yc

The WNBA is chock full of change agents, and given the communities Griner is part of and her stature as one of the world’s best basketball players, Griner certainly qualifies as one of those agents of change.
Change is coming, but we have to demand it.

We can’t sit back and wait. We have to go out and take it.

Another notable that made the Out100 2019 list was Megan Rapinoe – World Cup champion with the United States Women’s National Soccer Team and girlfriend of the Seattle Storm’s Sue Bird. She not only garnered headlines for the USWNT’s repeat performance in this year’s Women’s World Cup, but also for calling out the president’s anti-LGBTQ stance and for her advocacy of equal pay for the women’s team.
Last year’s rendition included Bird as well as Layshia Clarendon.

Among the other athletes that made the list were boxer Patricio Manuel, track and field’s Kerron Clement and NFL player Ryan Russell. It, of course, also recognized the contributions of those outside of the sporting realm, including Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, Jeremy O. Harris, Young M.A., Ronan Farrow, Crissle West and Lilly Singh.
Out Magazine’s Out100 special edition is scheduled to hit newsstands on December 10.
