Brittney Griner made a bit of news prior to a Sunday night game between the Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns.

On the Suns’ pregame show aired on Fox Sports Arizona, Griner made official that she indeed signed a multi-year extension with the Mercury.

Such a deal is expected to make Griner one of the WNBA’s highest paid players.

For her career, she has averaged 14.5 points per game, over seven rebounds per contest, and nearly four blocks. Griner has also participated in three All Star Games, was an important piece in the Mercury’s 2014 WNBA championship, and was part of last year’s United States Basketball Women’s National Team which won a gold medal at the Rio Olympics.

Building a championship team starts on the defensive end and this move keeps the best rim protector in the history of the women’s game in a Mercury uniform for the forseeable future. Griner has changed the way the WNBA game is played, she has rewritten the record books in just four years, and she is already a champion.

Most importantly, BG is part of our family, who is loved by her teammates and who keeps our locker room fun and light. She puts her heart into everything she cares about, on and off the court and we are thrilled to keep her in Phoenix.
