It’s no secret that reigning DPOY Brittney Griner and former wife, Tulsa Shock’s Glory Johnson, have had a tumultuous ride over the past few weeks. Even the strongest person in the world would have a difficult time dealing with the events these 2 ladies have had to endure. So it was no surprise that we got to see a more emotional side of Brittney during her sit-down interview with Kate Fagan of ESPNW.

Since the arrest that sparked the recent chain of events, Brittney has been relatively mum about her recent ordeals, partially due to its legal sensitivity and her court-ordered counseling program. However, she finally broke her silence this week to let us know her side of the story.

When asked about details of the night of the domestic dispute with then-fiance Glory Johnson, she didn’t go into too much depth, but confirmed that the details reported by the WNBA and the police department were in fact accurate, siting “mutual combat” as the basis for the arrest. She also said she wishes she would’ve just walked away from the altercation, and that regardless of the situation, domestic violence is never the answer.

Last Thursday, just a few weeks after their marriage, Glory announced that the couple is expecting their first child. While many of us fans were celebrating this exciting news, the feelings may not have been mutual for Brittney. When Kate asked her about the pregnancy announcement, Brittney revealed that she was surprised, and she felt it was too early to post or say anything about the news.

The very next day, Brittney filed for an annulment from Glory, citing “fraud and duress” in the paperwork filed. When asked about her motivation behind filing for the annulment, she said she didn’t want to go through with it after the arrest, and alluded to being pressured by Glory to go through with the ceremony. She felt the timing was bad, and it wasn’t the proper way to start off a marriage. In a statement released the day of the annulment filing, she said: “Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment. In the week prior to the wedding, I attempted to postpone the wedding several times until I completed counseling, but I still went through with it. I now realize that was a mistake.” Going forward, she plans to submerge herself in basketball. Since she is still serving her 7 game suspension, she definitely has her work cut out for her when she returns to the court. Watch the full interview below:

This whole situation is unfortunate, and one where no one walks away the winner. My hope is that Brittney and Glory, as well as others, will learn and grow from this situation, because there are plenty of life lessons to take from this.
