In the 2nd installment of her vlog series “Unfiltered” with Grit Media, Chiney addresses the issues with the way female athletes, particular basketball players, are shown in the media. She touches on a number of factors that tie into this issue, one being the assumptions that some make without even watching or attending a game or meeting a player. (Do you how much I hate hearing that ignorant s**t?!). Chiney also talks about the difficulty the media may have in showing the different sides and layers of female players. Check out what else she had to say about the topic below:
Allow me to take this moment to make a quick selfish plug here:
The very things she talked about in the above video are the very things that Beyond The W was created to address. One thing that I love about the major sports of America (all male) is how much we know about players outside of their respective games. We know what they are wearing, philanthropic projects they are working on, where they are traveling to, etc. Although the WNBA is considered one of these major American sports leagues, it’s often treated otherwise. Many, if not most, of the players in the WNBA are doing some pretty awesome things off the court. From being entrepreneurs, overcoming unimaginable adversities, having other skills, working on their charities, advancing their education, playing overseas, or raising a family, the WNBA is chock full of Renaissance women who have much more to their stories than typical mainstream media is willing to pay attention to. This site is a platform for these women to have their stories told, ideas shared, weakness challenged, and strengths praised in a safe, authentic, fresh, and honest way. My greatest wish at this point is for the players of the WNBA to recognize this and to allow and TRUST us to show how multifaceted they are. Beyond The W is here for the fans AND the players, and we promise to give you great, relevant, and all around dope content.
Ok….carry on. (*steps off soapbox*)
