We hear many stories in sports about athletes that overcome the odds in order to make the big time in professional sports. The WNBA alone is honeycombed with these sorts of stories of athletes that sacrificed so much to come from humble beginnings to the glitz and glamour of the pro ranks.
But what about those that nearly made it?
One of those is LaToria, a Dallas-area musician. In an interview with Rapzilla, she talked about how she played basketball through elementary school into high school at Mansfield High School in Tarrant County, Texas. She says that in additional to winning state championships at Mansfield, she received scholarships left and right.
LaToria attributes her changing her career path how she had to regain her identity as she began to second-guess her journey to the WNBA.
Jesus was definitely in the backseat, man. I was in a extreme backslidden state. The captain of my own ship, so to speak. And He let me, kind of, hit that hard wall and—my identity was in this pursuit of being a professional athlete at some point. And He took that away, and I was like, ‘Who am I?’ And so, He actually used my love of music to, kind of me back into a relationship with Him.

She also mentioned how she has worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to share her story and encourage young athletes use her example as reason to persevere as they pursue sports.
