During the offseason, the Phoenix Mercury made a bit of news when Brittney Griner announced at halftime of a Portland Trail Blazers-Phoenix Suns game that she would be returning to the Mercury.
Phoenix has managed to sign a second franchise player with the announcement that Diana Taurasi was signing a multi-year extension with the organization.
As long as Diana Taurasi wants to play in the WNBA, we want her in a Mercury uniform.
–Mercury general manager Jim Pitman
This season is Taurasi’s 13th in the WNBA, and was 175 points away from becoming the league’s all-time scorer as of the announcement of the extension. Taurasi has established one of the most storied careers in its history which includes seven All-Star appearances, three WNBA championships, and four Olympic gold medals.
This is where I want to play the rest of my career.
–Diana Taurasi
Taurasi also managed to make even more history in the Mercury’s 85-62 win over the Indiana Fever when she became the first player in WNBA history to compile 7,000 points along with 1,500 rebounds and assists.
