One of the more indelible images of the 2017 WNBA season took place on June 18 when the Phoenix Mercury took on the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks defeated the Mercury in a 90-59 blowout, but what everyone will remember from that game is what the occasion where Diana Taurasi further etched her name into basketball history.
It was the contest in which she set the WNBA’s all-time scoring record.

On that night among the bright lights and the big city of Los Angeles, she only needed 14 points to break a record that was previously held by Tina Thompson. Thompson played 17 seasons in the W while Taurasi did it in her 13th.
Something tells us very soon that the history-making Taurasi jersey will not be the only thing bearing her name or likeness that will be gracing the walls of Springfield, Massachusetts. As we wrote this, they are probably working on Taurasi’s Hall of Fame plaque as we speak – or at least they ought to be…
