According to Elena Delle Donne, the reigning league MVP for the Washington Mystics had her request denied to opt out of the 2020 season due to medical concerns.
In a statement she released to ESPN, the panel of doctors appointed by the WNBA said she is not at high-risk and should be allowed to play in Florida this summer.
Her agent, when speaking to ESPN, described Delle Donne’s reaction as one of “disbelief.”
Delle Donne was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2008 – and, because of the denial of her opt-out, would not be paid if she were to not play this season. Lyme disease is not listed by the CDC as an underlying condition that could put someone at risk of increased risk for severe illness by the coronavirus.
