We all know what to expect at any NBA awards show – and we also know what awards to expect to be presented at any NBA awards show.
How about when an awards program is NBA-centric but does anything but go by the traditional standards the Association does its awards by?
In the run-up to Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game, Showtime’s Desus & Mero, being the unique creatives and culture icons they are, decided to be … well, unique and creative for the culture. On Instagram, they hosted the first-ever Bolt24 (Gatorade) Real Star Awards that included appearances from a pair of WNBA players.
The women from the W that made cameos were Elena Delle Donne (Washington Mystics) and Sue Bird (Seattle Storm). Damian Lillard of the Portland Trail Blazers and Obi Toppin of the New York Knicks (right down the street/subway line from the Bronx at Madison Square Garden) also pulled up to The Bodega Boys’ virtual festivities.
The IG event featured awards not always seen on typical awards shows … such as “Player Most Likely to Bring Back Puka Shell Necklaces.”
