Essence Carson: protests are not about flag

The Los Angeles Sparks displayed another stance of solidarity prior to Game 3 of the WNBA Finals when they walked off the court prior to the playing of the National Anthem. There were some boos when they did so in Minnesota prior to Games 1 and 2, but were not booed in front of their home fans in Los Angeles.

Essence Carson spoke with TMZ Sports and reiterated that the narrative surrounding anthem protests is not about the flag – but about civil rights.

It feels like you’re standing for what you believe in – bringing attention to something that needs attention brought to it.

Everyone’s so focused on the flag and it’s not even about the flag. It’s about racial inequality, criminal justice reform, police brutality and everything along those lines and I feel like people are forgetting that.

Carson was also asked about what message to send to people who cling to a belief that the peaceful protests in sports during the anthem’s playing has to do with disrespecting the flag or the United States military.

All we can do is keep delivering our message in whatever way that you feel comfortable delivering it. And hopefully, one day, they’ll finally understand the point of it all.
