In 2020, the New York Liberty fielded a roster that consisted of rookies comprising roughly half of the team.

One of those rookies was Jocelyn Willoughby, and after having an impactful first season for the seafoam green and black in the bubble in Florida, she has her eye now on turning the page to her next chapter.

Willoughby in collaboration with the Liberty and Brooklyn’s Café con Libros, a feminist book store, will launch the Read What You Sow virtual book club in February of 2021. It will emphasize injustices affecting Black and Brown people in various walks of life.

The three-month club has opened itself for signups from now through Jan. 15.

Books help us come to terms with our complex world. They have the power to not only educate, but to encourage readers to act. This book club is established to help participants understand what change is needed in our respective communities, and to inspire us to imagine and ultimately enact what that change looks like.

Willoughby is not the only Lib to start a book club as Amanda Zahui B also did so during the 2020 season for middle school girls.

Jocelyn came to us with a clear-cut vision for how she wanted to make an impact in New York and in the community at large. Read What You Sow is just the beginning of her activism as a professional athlete and more importantly, a woman of color.

The Liberty will collaborate with the Brooklyn bookstore and coffee shop in curating books and supporting Black and womxn-owned businesses.

Over the years, it has reminded me that my personal problems are actually societal issues while also providing examples of Black womxn fighting for our collective recognition. Reading stories by and about Black Womxn sowed seeds of confidence and resolve that I can be part of the solution.
