Sports fans have their collective opinions about Kyrie Irving. Whether it was his “flat earth” comments from a few years ago, or his pushing earlier this year that there probably should not be an NBA season, the current Brooklyn Net and former Cleveland Cavalier is one to let his opinions known.
He is also one of the biggest advocates for the WNBA within NBA circles. He once commented that he could not wait for his daughters to grow up and wanted to emulate the best and brightest of the W.
How do we know Kyrie is a real one? He announced he would donate $1.5 million to WNBA players that are sitting out this season.
That list of noteworthy players includes Chiney Ogwumike, Tina Charles, Liz Cambage, Kristi Toliver, Jonquel Jones, Renee Montgomery and Natasha Cloud. The initiative also will provide WNBA players with a financial literacy program. Elena Delle Donne was initially denied a medical exemption before the Washington Mystics stepped up to pay her 2020 salary regardless.
We wondered who would pick up where Kobe left off in the commitment to ensure the WNBA is thriving beyond acknowledgement from the NBA. Encouraging investment here from @KyrieIrving. https://t.co/5kqp0TuxVx
