Lauren Hill: 1995-2015

Lauren Hill was a lot of things to those closest to her. Daughter. Sister. Grandbaby. Teammate. Classmate. Friend.

To the rest of the world, she was a teacher, inspiration, soldier, trendsetter, and voice for the voiceless.

Lauren educated us on the rare form of pediatric cancer she suffered from, DIPG, and how we can take part and raising awareness and funding much-needed research.

Lauren inspired a legion to shine in the moment. Not letting her weakened body stand in her way, she suited up and lived out her dream of playing college basketball by playing in not one, but FOUR games in a six-week time frame.

Lauren fought DIPG like a true soldier, often times quietly and privately during the final weeks of her life. Her own battle didn’t stop her from being on the front lines to fight the battles of so many others.

Lauren started the #LayupForLauren movement, challenging major athletes everywhere to spin 5 times and shoot a layup with their non-dominant hand (imitating her own imperfections on the court), earning the respect and support of the nation’s elite talent and powerhouses.

Lauren was a voice for the voiceless. For the millions of children suffering with various devastating diseases not only in our country, but around the world.

In his inspirational acceptance speech at last year’s ESPY awards, the late Stuart Scott said, “When you die, it does not mean you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” Well, Lauren kicked cancer’s ass early Friday morning, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.

Our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers with her family and friends, and we too ask that their privacy is respected. We thank you and miss you Lauren Hill. Now rest. We’llĀ  win this war for you. #RIP #PhuckCancer
