The Atlanta Dream’s Layshia Clarendon has certainly put her face to the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements. She is now alleging that she was a victim of sexual assault while at the University of California.
USA Today Sports obtained a lawsuit filed by Clarendon in Alameda County Superior Court saying that Mohamed Muqtar, the assistant director for student services, invited her to his residence during the 2009-10 school year. While Clarendon was using the bathroom, it is alleged her opened the door and assaulted her.
In an interview with ESPN, she says she never spoke about it while in school.
Cal’s athletic department is also named as defendants as Clarendon is alleging negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress. USA Today reports Cal knows about the lawsuit and that Muqtar has been placed on paid leave.
Regarding the news today: I want the shame to not be my own anymore, because it's not my shame to carry, but it's something that I've had to carry. It's a horrible thing to live in silence, to carry that pain and that weight and the guilt. https://t.co/Ah5RjNOY29

My biggest hope is that he never does this to anyone else. That no one else has to suffer under his hand, or him violating their bodies again. That this would be the end of him assaulting people. #TimesUp

It feels there is a big level of responsibility there for me, to make sure this doesn't continue. And he doesn't continue to harm other people.
