The lone remaining WNBA team in search of a new head coach – the New York Liberty – has completed its search … and it will reveal the results of that find this upcoming week.
According to a team press release, the Liberty will announce the new coach in a 10 a.m. press conference to be held Wednesday at Barclays Center, the Libs’ new full-time home venue.
The latest reports of the Liberty’s coaching find indicated that it was down to the “final three,” including Washington Mystics assistant Eric Thibault, Minnesota Lynx assistant Walt Hopkins, and former Connecticut Sun assistant Steve Smith.
The Liberty’s search for a new coach began after Katie Smith’s contract was not renewed with the team following her two-year tenure at the helm. New York, playing both years (2018 and 2019) at the much-maligned Westchester County Center in White Plains, went a combined 17-51 under Smith, but hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 WNBA draft, a selection many believe will be Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu.
The new coach, along with New York general manager Jonathan Kolb are scheduled to be in attendance at Wednesday’s presser in Brooklyn, per the team’s release. We will soon know who will lead the W’s flagship franchise into its new digs at Atlantic and Flatbush.
