Louisville takes next step in pursuing WNBA

Louisville’s professional hoop dreams took another step forward recently when a Metro Council committee approved a resolution that aims to entice both the WNBA and NBA to place franchises in the city.

In terms of a WNBA franchise, placing a team at the KFC Yum! Center may not be much of a challenge given the league is a summer-based entity. The Louisville Cardinals women’s and men’s basketball teams, which are the primary tenants at the non-University owned arena, play their games primarily during the winter months.

One council member did express doubts on if Louisville had the money to support teams, but did vote for the measure.

The provision for the WNBA team to also be on Louisville’s radar was originally added by Democratic Councilwoman Mary Woolridge of Louisville-Jefferson County. The measure was originally NBA-based.
