We are nearly a month into the WNBA’s 20th season and it has become historic in more ways than one.
Not only has the WNBA reached the big 2-0, but there are still two remaining teams with the little zero in the loss column.
One of those teams is the defending champions—the Minnesota Lynx. History was made at the Target Center in Minneapolis last night when the Lynx scored an 87-63 victory over the Indiana Fever. With the win, they became the first team in history to start a season with an 11-0 record.
The Lynx had five players in double-digits for points—including Maya Moore who had 16, Seimone Augustus who added 12, and 11 each for Jia Perkins and Sylvia Fowles.
But right behind the Lynx are the also undefeated Los Angeles Sparks, who also were at home on Tuesday night as they played the Chicago Sky. Led by the stellar shooting performance of Nneka Ogwumike who had 27 points for the game, the Sparks topped the Sky, 98-85 for the team’s tenth victory of the season.
Much of those 98 points can also be attributed to defense as well as ball movement on offense for LA as they finished with 24 assists.
This for sure has to be exciting for the WNBA to be in the midst of a season with two undefeated teams. Of course, this will not entirely last as even if both are undefeated the two teams will eventually play each other.
But with the two undefeated teams, this for sure builds buzz around the league and will even enter the mainstream sports conversation as the WNBA deserves to be in on a consistent basis.
With the NBA Finals winding down and the Olympics not until August, the play of Minnesota and Los Angeles becomes one of the major stories for the league as we get closer to the Olympic break.
And thanks to the updated playoff format this year, there is even a chance that the WNBA Finals this year could be Lynx vs. Sparks because of the conference format being eliminated from the postseason.
Until then, the Sparks and Lynx have one game left before facing each other for two consecutive games spanning June 21 and June 24. On Friday, the Sparks will be at home to face the Mercury. On Sunday, the Lynx travel to Seattle to play the Storm.
Then comes June 21—Lynx vs. Sparks at Staples Center. Have you marked your calendars yet?
