In a major move for the Phoenix Mercury, the team announced that they have acquired Kelsey Bone from the Connecticut Sun in exchange for Courtney Williams, the rights to Jillian Alleyne who was drafted in the second round of this year’s draft and the 2017 second round pick of the San Antonio Stars.
Bone was originally the fifth overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft and just earned her first All-Star selection last season after averaging over 15 points a game for Connecticut. Last year, she was selected as the WNBA’s Most Improved Player. She is currently averaging just under 11 points per game this year.
“In-season trades rarely net you an All-Star like Kelsey Bone,” said Mercury General Manager Jim Pitman.

The Mercury’s trade for the All-Star was not the only deal they had made. Phoenix also got Angelica Robinson from the Seattle Storm in a deal which netted Seattle Noelle Quinn.
If the season were to end today, the Mercury would find themselves just barely out of the playoff picture at 5-9. Currently, as of this writing, the eighth and final playoff berth would go to the Indiana Fever at 6-9.
