If you’re a female basketball player (or athlete in general), I’m pretty sure that you have dealt with one, if not all, of the following clothing mishaps:

  • basketball shorts that are long enough, but way too big
  • rolling oversized shorts at the waist to avoid slipping down
  • basketball workout shirts that are long, but too big
  • having to tuck the sleeves of your oversized shirt into your sports bra
  • your sports bra showing on the sides

This is just a few of the many struggles that we as women have had to deal with as athletes and have tried to find solutions to forever.

Our prayers have been heard, and Nike has answered the call with their latest release: Nike Elite Women’s Basketball Collection. The only word to describe this: AMAZING!

Utilizing the input of the WNBA’s top players, UConn Women’s basketball, and high school basketball teams around he country, Nike assigned a select group of female designers to put together an innovative collection of women’s basketball tailored to the various shapes, sizes, and needs of the modern everyday hooper.

Shock guard Skylar Diggins expressed her excitement about the collection in an official press release from the athletic apparel giant, “This is giving us what we want and need. I have been waiting for this forever.” And we are just as excited as she is. So let’s get right into the gear (as described in the official release):

Nike Elite Women’s Basketball Tank

The Nike Elite Women’s Basketball Tank optimizes lightweight breathability, delivers a contour fit and stretches for mobility.

• Dri-FIT double-knit mesh on the front and back of the tank pulls sweat away from the skin to reduce chill and keep athletes dry.
• Lightweight open-hole knit mesh on the back features zoned ventilation in high-heat areas.
• The modified V-neckline ensures a non-restrictive fit.

Nike Elite Women’s Basketball Short

Engineered with a slim fit and a reduced seven-inch inseam, the Nike Elite Women’s Basketball Short provides optimal mobility and lightweight comfort.

• Laser-cut perforations on the short’s side panels enhance breathability where the athlete needs it most.
• The waistband and drawcord deliver a custom fit.
• The gradient graphic print on the lower leg panels is inspired by NCAA uniforms.
• The short’s stretch-woven fabric has been mechanically recycled.

Nike Elite Cuff Women’s Basketball Pant

The Nike Elite Cuff Women’s Basketball Pant offers ease and comfort.

 • Breathable Dri-FIT fabric helps the athlete’s legs stay dry by wicking sweat away from the skin.
• The waistband provides a superior, personalized fit.
• Tapered legs cut close to the body for a flattering look.

Nike Hyper Elite Women’s Basketball Hoodie

The Nike Hyper Elite Women’s Basketball Hoodie is Nike Basketball’s most innovative hoodie solution and is tailored for on-court performance.

• Decoupled sleeves and interior stretch-mesh panels enhance range of motion, allowing for superior movement.
• Dri-FIT fabric on the hoodie pulls sweat away from the skin to help keep the athlete dry and comfortable.
• A dropped, loose-fitting hem provides free movement and prevents ride-up when shooting.
• The four-piece performance hood features a comfortable fit for optimal mobility.

FLAMES!

Nike hosted an official launch event with a panel Nike WBB finest: Elena Delle Donne, ROY Jewell Lloyd, superstars Chiney Ogwumike and Sue Bird, moderated by legend Sheryl Swoopes, the first female basketball player ever signed to Nike. Afterwards, attendees had the chance to test some of the latest gear at local Hudson River Park, where Chiney and Sue helped the ladies run through a series of routine drills and warm ups used during their own practice sessions.  Check out our recap of this fun and informative discussion:

I had the chance to test the items as well (off-camera of course), and I must say that Nike hit the nail right on the head! The tank is so lightweight, soft on the skin, and moved very well with my larger frame, absorbing sweat VERY quickly. The shorts were a great length: not too long or baggy wear I would have to roll it up, but not to short or tight.

Although there are only four core items, new merchandise is definitely on the way. Salute to Nike for taking this major leap and doing it the right way: FOR WOMEN. BY WOMEN.
