Whether it is Houston or Los Angeles, the Ogwumikes know how to put on for their city.

The 2020 election saw record turnout at the polls – and one of the focal points of said election was Houston, Texas. In spite of continued efforts by the Lone Star State’s governor to restrict access to the polls, Houston was determined to show up.

Those that voted at Toyota Center – the home court of the Houston Rockets – may have noticed two of Texas’ favorite daughters making sure things went smoothly. H-Town’s very own Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike were working as poll workers at the Toyota Center for the election.

Both Ogwumikes have their jerseys retired at Cy-Fair High School in northwest Harris County.

Up until this year, through playing in the WNBA and even during my time as a student at Stanford, I didn’t know what a poll worker truly was. But when I learned, it was a no-brainer for me. I called my boss, asked for the day off, booked a ticket home to Texas and signed up.

President-elect Joe Biden won nearly a million votes in Texas’ largest county in an election that saw record turnout for the Lone Star State. Harris County, appropriately went 56-43 in favor of Biden and … Harris.
