Mention anything about a “solar eclipse” to anyone on the Connecticut Sun and their response ought to be: “Solar eclipse? New phone, who dis?”

The playoff-bound Connecticut Sun have become a formidable force in the WNBA this season, and that continued on Sunday when the Sun, fittingly, thrashed the Phoenix Mercury by a final of 94-66.

Side note–whoever made the decision for the Sun to play the Mercury the day prior to the eclipse was obviously thinking well ahead. Props.

The Sun had five players in double-digits for points led by Jonquel Jones who had 20 and Alyssa Thomas who contributed a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Courtney Williams added 16.

Brittney Griner led the Mercury with 18 points and Monique Currie scored 12. Diana Taurasi only had seven and went three-for-11 from the field.

Despite both teams being evenly matched at the half with the Sun maintaining a 46-45 lead, Connecticut outscored Phoenix 48-21 in the second half.

Connecticut’s record is now 19-10 and Phoenix now stands at 15-14. The Mercury would be the sixth seed if the playoffs began today.

Speaking of a darkened “Sky”..in Chicago, the issue was not an eclipse—but a Storm.

In Seattle’s 103-66 victory over the Sky, Breanna Stewart finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists and they got 17 points each from Alysha Clark and Jewell Loyd. Crystal Langhorne and Sami Whitcomb added 10 each.

Stefanie Dolson finished with 10 points for Chicago. The Storm are now 14-16 and would be the seventh seed if the postseason began today. The Sky are currently 11-18 but have yet to be mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
