February 1st was the first day of the WNBA’s free agent period, and we are starting with one who has Georgia (her home state) on her mind.
The Atlanta Dream announced today that they have inked a deal with Renee Montgomery, who will be arriving in the ATL after a stint with the defending champion Minnesota Lynx – the team that originally drafted her in 2009.
During her time with the Lynx, she won two WNBA championships.
Reports came out yesterday that Montgomery could very well be heading elsewhere, and she posted this message on her Instagram account.
Renee Montgomery signs multi-year contract with @AtlantaDream. "Leaving the Minnesota Lynx was difficult, but I’m excited to bring that championship experience to the Atlanta Dream,” said Montgomery, who lives in Atlanta.

I live in Atlanta, so I’m excited to come back east where I’m closer to family and friends and start a new journey with the Dream.
–Renee Montgomery, per press release
Beyond her skill on the court, I believe her championship pedigree will help lend leadership in the locker room. Fans will love her tenacity defensively and her ability to light it up from deep. I could not be happier that she has decided to call Atlanta her WNBA home and help build something special here.
–Nicki Collen, Dream head coach, per press release
Last year, Montgomery averaged eight points per game in Minnesota and had a three-point shooting percentage near 35 percent.
