The Los Angeles Sparks already had a plethora of decisions to make regarding who to keep and who not to keep when the WNBA’s free agency period begins.
It looks as if the Magic Johnson-led investment group that owns the Sparks will have another big find on its mind along with its laundry list of free agents that includes Candace Parker, Nneka Ogwumike and Chelsea Gray.
The Washington Post is reporting that Sparks president and COO Danita Johnson will be hired as the new president of business operations Major League Soccer’s DC United. If said hiring is confirmed, she would be the first Black woman or man to be hired to such a post in MLS.
Johnson first assumed the president/COO role with Los Angeles in 2018, succeeding Christine Simmons who took a job with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She has previous experience in Washington with the Mystics front office.
Prior to becoming the president and COO of the Sparks, she was LA’s Senior Vice President and also was part of the Los Angeles Clippers’ front office as its Director of Business Operations.
The news also comes a few days after the Sparks announced it would retain assistant coach Latricia Trammell for Derek Fisher’s staff.
