A number of WNBA players – including the New York Liberty’s Kia Nurse – play overseas in Australia when the W season has concluded. This is, of course, because of the added financial incentives many pro women’s basketball players have to take their talents to other countries.
There is a chance that WNBA players could lose that option next season.
According to a report out of the Sydney Morning Herald, the Covid-19 pandemic has made teams tighten budgets in addition to the uncertainty around global travel. It says the league is having “weekly” meetings on the matter.
The report described the idea of an import-less WNBL season as under “strong consideration,” but that teams expect the WNBL will move forward with said plan.
Nurse made history as the first import to claim WNBL MVP honors. She also drained a game-winning shot for the Canberra Capitals to claim its second consecutive WNBL championship.
