As the season is only a bit more than two weeks away, one of the teams that many onlookers will keep close eyes on is the New York Liberty.
Off-court issues aside, the Liberty have shown signs lately of entering the 2018 season revamped and reloaded under first-year head coach Katie Smith. They selected Kia Nurse – one of three UConn players selected in the first round of this year’s WNBA Draft, they recently signed Marissa Coleman, Brittany Boyd is in training camp, and Shoni Schimmel is back with the team.
Per a recently released piece in the Associated Press, Schimmel needed time away from the game to get right mentally and recover from a concussion she suffered in August of 2016.
I was out seven weeks with it.
I never had had one before and didn’t know how to handle it. I took my time to get myself ready.
Being able to take that year off, I want to thank the Liberty. I’ve come back ready to work.

After only playing 17 games in 2016, Schimmel looks to be a key piece in New York’s puzzle in curing what has ailed them for many years – great regular seasons only to suffer early playoff exits.
I’m more excited to play than I’ve been in a while.
