The San Antonio Stars fittingly retired the jersey of Becky Hammon June 25 since she wore the number 25 during her time in the WNBA.
On the 15th of July, the Seattle Storm’s famous number 15 will receive the same honor.
Lauren Jackson will become the first player in Storm history to have her jersey retired and her number raised to the rafters at KeyArena. On June 15, the Storm will play the Washington Mystics at The Key.
In my opinion, she is the most dominant player the women’s game has ever seen. Not only was she the most talented, but she was also second to none as a fierce competitor. She is one of those rare players that, when she would set foot in a gym, everyone knew we could win a championship.
–Storm head coach Jenny Boucek
This has been quite the year for the former Storm great as she recently returned to her home country of Australia to assume an executive position with the WNBL’s Melbourne Boomers.
Jackson finished her career averaging nearly 19 points per game and played her entire career with the WNBA with the Storm. She also led Seattle to a pair of WNBA championships—once in 2004 and again in 2010. She also led the Australian National Team to silver medals at three consecutive Olympics—2000, 2004, and 2008. This past Tuesday, she was named as one of the WNBA’s “Top 20@20.”
What an honor and congratulations!
