The first of two morning matinees the Liberty will host this year at White Plains’ Westchester County Center saw a bit of Libs history made in the closing moments.

The 21 points and 14 rebounds Tina Charles notched against the Los Angeles Sparks put her atop the all-time Liberty scoring list, as she now has scored 3,248 points while donning black and statue green.

For that to happen – I never would have imagined it, never would have envisioned it. I’m just grateful to play in my city, play in New York. It does mean a lot.

Rebecca Allen was asked about Charles’ huge milestone in a sit-down interview with CBS New York.

I’m really happy for her, she’s achieved a lot.

I think for myself, I think it’s pretty amazing to be such a great player and be an even better person. I think that says a lot about her character. I know a lot of people learn from her. She leads by example with how she plays on the court.

The accomplishment was mired, somewhat, by the fact that Charles’ history-making bucket came in another Liberty defeat. New York has dropped 16 consecutive games dating back to last season, including the most recent loss – a 78-73 defeat to the Sparks.
The Liberty had a 69-64 lead late before Los Angeles closed the contest on a 14-4 scoring binge.

Still, coach Katie Smith believes the win column is within her team’s grasp.

If we do this every single night, we compete like this, we’re going to win some ballgames.

After our last performance, this was a huge step forward. It was a great response after a disappointing game at Indiana.
