WNBA Draft announced for April 12 at Nike NYC HQ

Earlier this week, and with the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament on the horizon, we received an answer to a question that was a burning one for many fans last year.

That was the location and time of the 2018 WNBA Draft, which will be held on April 12 at Nike’s headquarters in New York City.

Ironically, this is coming in the first year of a multi-year contract where Nike became the official apparel provider for the WNBA, NBA, and G-League.

The draft will be aired on ESPN2 with the subsequent two rounds being shown on ESPNU. The April 12 date comes only a bit more than a week after the conclusion of the tournament, culminating with the Women’s Final Four in late March-early April.

In similar – and for many fans, disappointing – fashion to last year’s draft which was held at the Samsung building in New York, the venue’s small location will once again make it inaccessible for fans.

The staging of the draft in these compact venues in Gotham may begin a conversation among fans as to if the draft should move back to Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Arena if larger venues in the Tri-State area are unavailable due to either finances or scheduling conflicts.

The Las Vegas Aces have the top pick in this year’s draft and most mock drafts have Bill Laimbeer’s team selecting South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson as the top overall pick.
