One of the biggest lowlights of the 2020 WNBA season was when Sabrina Ionescu rolled her ankle in a game against the Atlanta Dream, sidelining her for the remainder of the season.
What made it even worse – it was only Ionescu’s third game donning New York Liberty black and seafoam.
The Liberty announced that Ionescu’s ankle procedure was indeed successful and was performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
According to a release, the procedure was to remove a chip that was affecting a tendon near her ankle.
This chip that occurred during her sprain in July, did not involve the ankle joint cartilage surface and we expect a complete recovery. The ligaments she tore during her injury have all completely healed and there was no need for an ankle ligament stabilization procedure.

The injury and Ionescu’s ongoing recovery has led to plenty of speculation as to if Ionescu will head overseas sometime between now and the 2021 WNBA season.
I am committed to returning in 2021 fully prepared to rejoin my team and jumpstart my WNBA career.

My rehab has been going very well and I look forward to getting back on the court.
