During the WNBA off-season, many players take the time to play for other clubs overseas, catch up on business affairs, and travel. Many players also use this time to connect to their surrounding communities and fans in a variety of ways, and one way is through youth basketball camps. One of the leagues biggest stars and leaders, Lynx’s Maya Moore, hit the road with her camp, the Moore Academy, and we were on hand at the NY stop to capture this amazing camp experience!
In between drills, I had a chance to talk to the reigning MVP about the activities and skills she instills in the attendees of her camp. We also chopped it up about the inaugural girls game at the Jordan Brand Classic, juggling her busy schedule, and the role her faith plays in her career. Check out our inspiring and thought-provoking conversation below:
I also sat down with Scott Savor, Camp Director, about Life Time Fitness’s relationship with Maya and with other members of the NBA and WNBA family:
If you can describe in a nutshell, tell us all about Life Time Fitness and what you guys are about.
Life Time Fitness is a healthy way-of-life company. Every aspect of what they do from head to toe, nutrition, speed and agility, skill development. Everything is a holistic prescription.
How did you guys team up with Maya Moore? How long have you guys been working with her, and what was it like to work with her to put this awesome camp together?
We are very fortunate having our corporate headquarters in Minnesota, and Maya being a Minnesota Lynx player, to connect very quickly because we’re in the same region, same state. It just took off from there. One thing we really believe in is surrounding ourselves with people who believe what we believe. First and foremost, we believe that Maya Moore has great character and great leadership, and those are the things and the kind of people that we want to associate ourselves with.
In addition to Maya, who else have you with worked with?
Ricky Rubio has been on the radar the last few years that he’s been a (Minnesota) Timberwolves player. Kevin Love was also on our radar before he got traded. We’ve been in a very unique and fortunate position right now because maybe within the last month, we’ve had made 10-15 different NBA and WNBA players both current and retired reach out to us for our camps and clinics. So we’re in a great situation right now.
Overall, the Maya Moore Academy was an amazing experience, one that made me wish that I was young enough to participate. Maya’s leadership, passion for the game, and down-to-earth personality shined brightly, helping the little ladies connect with her on a different level. (Did I mention that Maya can actually freestyle?) The campers left with real skills, life lessons, healthy lifestyle tips, and memories with a legend in the making. Those crisp kicks on their feet were an added bonus too.
And the good news?? Registration is currently open for the Minneapolis leg of her camp tour taking place this August! Click here for full details and to register your little lady today.
